5 Mile Tempo Run

This morning Rowdy decided to protect our home from possum invasion. At 4:30 am I was in the middle of the backyard with a broomstick, prying my dog off a possum. I'm happy to report that Rowdy came out the incident unscathed and no possums partied in my house. What a great dog I have. If only Rikki were so brave.

The tempo run was good, but really tough. The humidity was 100% and it was hot - made for some really fun fog to run through. And despite that my reproductive organs were trying to weave themselves out of my body, I finished in 49:35. Not too bad - 9:55 pace.

I ended up with some really bad shin splints after the run - an indication for me that I need new shoes. I'm a little freaked out by this because the Chicago Marathon is only 11 days away. I was really hoping these shoes would hold out. I'm really not sure what to do. Do I get new shoes? Should I tough it out and take my chances? I run in Brooks Adrenaline and LOVE them. I've never had any trouble with them even when they were new . . . but, doesn't getting new shoes less than 2 weeks before a marathon violate some kind of sacred running rule?

As long as you get the EXACT same shoe, and get a few runs in to break them in a little, I would do it...

I bet that possum was scared to death of little Cujo (I mean Rowdy).

Sorry about the reproductive thing...(Thank-you God for the eleventy-millionth time, that I am a guy!)

How's the Nano-begging coming?

I'd get a new pair of shoes wear them around the house to get them broken in then run in them for as many training runs as possible. but i don't like to change shoes before a race...

One the one hand - superstition, on the other hand - shin splints...I know which hand I would want to avoid right now.

I thinkn the whole breaking in of shoes thing is related to ye olden dayes when shoes had to be broken in - man you can buy a pair of hiking boots these days and take off for a 10 miler with no adverse reaction.

I'd go new rather than risk shin pain.

Did you really get shin splints or are you trying to go shopping? I say get new ones - not that I have any running, shoe, or marathon expertise.

I am really amazed that you get up so early in the morning and still wear a smile at work. I am cranky if I wake before 7. You are my hero. One that I am not inspiring to be but I do admire you.

When I deliver this alien inside me, maybe I will walk a block. Will I need new shoes for that? I bought some in March to work out in during pregnancy but funny/sad thing is: they are still in the box. That is $90 that could have gone to something else.

I've seen you around, now I see you are going to Chicago's marathon as dgc, how lucky you are!! I was laughing because you say you will be too tired if the day before the race you walk a lot... and about the list, I think many of us have the same problem... start from now with a list with all you need, as I told my husband it is not just going and run, you need a lot of stuff!!!

get the new shoes and put in a couple runs. if they're the same thing as what you're wearing now, then you shouldn't have a problem. just don't do it the day before the race.

Good luck in Chicago.

I'm having a bit of a shoe dilemma myself. Been doing most of my training runs, and my "tune up" 1/2 marathon in New Balance. I've had a pair of Saucony that I wear sporadically, including for a 5K the week before the 1/2.

I really want to wear the New Balance for the Twin Cities Marathon this weekend, but the tread is starting to show definite wear. So, I'll be wearing the Saucony, which should be fine, except that when I have been picturing myself crossing the finish line, it's been in the NB.

I vote for new shoes. Since you are not switching brands, you will be fine. I just bought new shoes (same brand that I usually wear) and trained in them all week and then ran that 1/2 marathon. They are great!

My ferocious dogs fall for the "playing possum" act. I have 2 dogs that weigh 95 lbs each and one that is around 70lbs and they just stood there looking at this opposum that was playing dead in the yard. I brought the dogs inside, looked outside a few moments later and the opposum was much for my intimidating dogs!!

....and flatman gets to miss out on the fun things about being a, getting whistled at while racing, wearing pink, being a mom, shopping.... :0

I have two dogs. The older one - with experience - got duped by a possum once. The second time she tore into that possum and had a tug of war with my younger male terrier until that sucker was d-e-a-d. Smart doggies.
Smart Susan: new shoes; same brand; break 'em in like everybody else says. Of course, you'll have to put your old pic back up since you'll be a shopper, not a runner for at least a day.

Yeah...but I still don't get all PMS-y!

(I shop...and who says I don't get whistled at during a race...I usually don't wear pink...and I am a dad...) Yup, still glad to be a guy!
