9 days to go - Easy 3 mile run

Nice cool morning - for once. Easy 3 mile run - I forgot my watch but I think my time was around 29 min - my running compardres & I all finished around the same time. Busy Busy Busy Day. Shoes feel good. Shins a little sore, but I expect will get better soon. Still stressed I haven't made a spreadsheet of things to pack - must do that this weekend.

Food: coffee with cream, bagel w/cream cheese, diet coke, egg salad w/havarti on ww bread ---> 980 calories. Snack reeces pb cup ---> 1015 calories. Mushrooms w/sausage, ceasar salad, lingine w/meat sauce, g. red wine. ---> I don't know, maybe 6,000 calories for the day.

10 days to go and I got New Shoes

Went to RunOn last night and picked up a new pair of Brooks - same shoe, but they had the new Adrenaline 6 and my old shoes were the Adrenaline 5s. Did some cross training in them this morning and they seemed ok. My goal is to wear them every possible second until the marathon to make sure they are worn in enough. I have a 10 mile scheduled Saturday morning - that should help some.

My weight is drastically rising. Running does not give me permission to be a human garbage disposal. When will I learn.

Food today: coffee w/cream, diet coke (shut up David :)), 12 triscits, egg beaters w/salsa - OMG already ---> 505 calories. Lunch: diet coke (again), 1/2 giant potato from Jasons & cup of vegetable soup ---> 1019.5 calories & counting . . . sf hot choc ---> 1064.5 . . . about 500 triscits more ---->1595.5 calories. Penne Arrabiata, water, 1/2 g red wine --->2115.5 total calories

5 Mile Tempo Run

This morning Rowdy decided to protect our home from possum invasion. At 4:30 am I was in the middle of the backyard with a broomstick, prying my dog off a possum. I'm happy to report that Rowdy came out the incident unscathed and no possums partied in my house. What a great dog I have. If only Rikki were so brave.

The tempo run was good, but really tough. The humidity was 100% and it was hot - made for some really fun fog to run through. And despite that my reproductive organs were trying to weave themselves out of my body, I finished in 49:35. Not too bad - 9:55 pace.

I ended up with some really bad shin splints after the run - an indication for me that I need new shoes. I'm a little freaked out by this because the Chicago Marathon is only 11 days away. I was really hoping these shoes would hold out. I'm really not sure what to do. Do I get new shoes? Should I tough it out and take my chances? I run in Brooks Adrenaline and LOVE them. I've never had any trouble with them even when they were new . . . but, doesn't getting new shoes less than 2 weeks before a marathon violate some kind of sacred running rule?

13 Days Left

I'm getting excited - ready to be in Chicago. I love Chicago, I love shopping Chicago. Need to remind myself not to exhaust myself walking around the day before.

Still have so much to do.

Must make a spreadsheet of things I need to take with me. From iPod to supplements - nothing big, just so many small things. Pictures of the Expo look scary - the White Rock Expo was a nightmare and I'm hoping that Chicago will be a little more organized.

The weather looks like highs in the upper 70's and lows in the mid 50's. Not too bad - although humidity look like it will be high and a pretty good chance of rain. I hate running in the rain - well, actually I don't mind running in the rain, just hate running with wet feet.

The Taper Phase - my favorite phase

Last long run before Chicago Marathon . . . YAY

Today was our last long run before Chicago - now the taper begins, and I cannot tell you how excited I am to taper. Went into the run today not really wanting to run - but we did it - slow and not as far as we wanted - but, the we got enough time on the road - my hips and knees were really achy during the entire run. It's been a tough monster month.

Early into our run this morning a turkey flew down and startled us as it landed very close to us, too close. Turkeys are big. I for the first time - saw a turkey fly. I seriously did not know that turkeys could fly - I assumed they grew on farms somewhere and just got fat all day - naive I am. Ended up seeing about 6 or 7 turkeys waddling around our course - in the midst of a big city no less . . . first time for everything I guess.

My precious has arrived . . .

Late yesterday, my apple powerbook G4 with cordless mouse & keyboard and 20" monitor arrived at work . . . ohhhh myyyy, am so in love - must be careful not to drool on it or take it to bed with me - technically it doesn't belong to me. But if it were mine - I so would.

Today is a recovery day for tomorrow's 20 miler - cut short from 24 - due to advice from all of you - thanks! Only 16 days until Chicago Martahon - YAY! I must start packing and come up with some devious plan to get a nano by then.

OMG, my toenail fell off and the there was one growing UNDER it totally funky

For all of you that haven't heard me talk about my husband's toes - they are totally grotesque. He's a cyclist and his toes are the ugliest toes in the entire world - uglier than anything you can possibly imagine, disguisting. One of the biggest fears I have is having toes that look like his. I would post a picture of his toe, but none of you would return to my blog - ever again - it really is that bad. Any advice on getting these things to grow back to their proper shape?

Great tempo run

Tempo run was great this morning. I don't have much time to post today, I have to *work* today. Jobs, they get in the way training don't they. Anyhow, started off the run fast, slowed in the middle a litte - but did my last mile in 7 minutes! I love finishing fast (that's fast for me.) More later!

Ok - so I'm back and here is a quick recap:

Program - 7.38 mile tempo run (cut short to get to work on time - damn job)
  • Miles 1&2 around 8:50 - 9 min miles - way to fast to start
  • miles 3-6 min miles - really slow, still asleep
  • felt like I had a lot of energy - so I said let's see how fast I can go
  • mile 7 - 7:20 - YAY. I was so shocked - I really need to learn how to pace better - I think I'm gonna get my own garmin girl

Total time was 1hr 15 min - ave pace - 10 min:10 sec miles.

Food today: coffee, coffee, coffee, turkey, beef, bbq sauce, potatoe salad, baked beans, diet coke, water, water, water, leftover pasta, green beans, orange sherbert

Weight - up drastically - 7 lbs - Yikes, I'm gonna feel those on the road this weekend.

Felt like running in San Francisco - only hotter

Today's 14 mile run was really tough for me. I didn't get enough sleep last night, and drank 2 glasses of wine at dinner - so I was a little dehydrated this morning, it was 90 degrees outside, the humidity was really high, not to mention the ragweed. Woke up again with my eyes crusted shut, and my Ipod battery died at mile 8. Nothing but nature to propel me for six more miles - and nature does not have the bass line of Gwen Stefani. (Have I mentioned my need for a Nano?)

The hills on this loop are really tough and there is only one that goes down, the rest go up up up. . . Anyhow, I am very happy because I am building some serious strength and power in my legs. The Chicago course is flat, but I'm going to use this strength and power to propel me forward faster! I can taste the 4 hour marathon, I've been training so hard - just one more week of intense training and then the taper! YAY.

I've got to get control

Over the past 3 days, on top of my regular meals and snacks, I've consumed 2 cans of pringles (chili & cheese flavor) and 14 rice crispy treats. I've also managed to avoid water - a basic necessity of life, but maganed to drink 16 diet cokes. I'm going to run a marathon in 23 days - and I'm acting like my dog Rikki - who's sole purpose in life is to consume any and all things that drop on the floor. She once at a twist tie - the dog is solid skull from ear-to-ear.

On another subject - I think all people with short legs like me should get a head start in races - it really makes perfect sense.

Should I be worried, I always look like I need pulled from a race.

Tempo Day

So tired was I this morning . . . it was tempo run day. 8 was scheduled, we decided on 5 yesterday and ended up doing 4 this morning. I am still really fatigued from Sunday's long run. I don't feel too guilty, because my body was tired and my allergies were bad . . . but still - I wonder how much I'm cheating myself. I am NOT drinking enough water - shame on me - I can't figure out why, you would think I was trying to poison myself with water . . . Today I am forcing myself to drink.

I'm pissed off

I've trained for nearly half of this year for the Chicago Marathon - and on Sunday, October 9th, 2005 - the day of the marathon - I will start my period. The gods hate me.

Light Cross Training Day

Today is a light cross-training day . . . I'm dreading tomorrow's tempo run. It just seems so wrong to wake up at 4:30 AM to run fast. It's just wrong. 8 Miles is on the schedule, but I think we will only be able to do 5. I don't know how people can do more than that and get to work/take kids to school/morning errands all on time. I'm so bloated from all the sodium/food I ingested yesterday.

Rest day today

I'm still so excited about yesterday's run - even though I was a little slower than expected - the entire run was hilly and I finished really strong. I feel great today - a little sore thru the shoulders and have a fair amount of chaffing, but other than that, my body feels GREAT - and am really happy about it. Mentally this was a great challenge for me to overcome - hills have always been one of my major weaknesses.

I don't know if it is possible or not, but I feel likeI built some serious strength in my legs yesterday. Can that happen after just one run? Will it stick with until Oct 9th for the Chicago Marathon - hopefully, I must stick with my training though.

Tomorrow is just 30 min of cross training and some weights, but Wed is an 8 mile tempo run. Not sure what that will end of being - we'll see.

FYI - I'm starving and eating everything I can get my hands on today.

Warning: the following hill-training post contains many Obscenities

Wow - what a tough run, I am thoroughly and completely poopified. Started off with the normal 2 mile walk to warm up, then we headed out to run our new course for some hill-training. This course was up hill the ENTIRE way. No seriously, for 21 miles we run up hill. It was torture. I was doing great with the rolling hills through highland shores, mindfully conquering every one with a fuck you hill attitude the entire way. At mile 6 or so I reached a nasty hill and had to walk up the final quarter mile to the top.

This made me mad. Really mad. Also, I was mad at the stupid car that nearly ran us off the road yelled get on the sidewalk - stupid idiot - I have just as much right to be on the road as they do. This made me mad and really determined.

I ran up every hill the rest of the route. I nearly died, seriously, nearly died while climbing the simmons/mccamy hill. The entire way I chanted like the little engine that could - fuckity fuck fuck.

Lord have mercy on the day I post a 21 mile hill-training run and can shout - fuck you 10 min mile.

And fuck you to the driver ran my friend off the road. I'm glad your window is broken - put down the fucking beer before you get in the car next time - fucking bastard.

Scary? and burned out. 23 miles. sigh.

Who things my profile picture is scary? I have one vote for mean (Amy) and several gay boys think it's scary. What do you think? I was going for serious runner with lots of character.

Sunday is the long run day - 23 miles - and I am so burned out from all the training we've been doing. I'm not looking forward to it at all, which makes me sad. I've put a new route together and I hope that helps. I do have to say that I have made vast improvements these past three months of training - I've gotten faster and worked on my form a lot - that's not to say I don't have room for improvement. Those 8 min miles are out there somewhere.

I really dread getting up early on Sunday, dread taking the muscle fuel, dread putting the water out, dread fearing it will be a bad run day, dread peeing in the grass, dread that my stretch marks with scab from the waistband of my shorts rubbing against them. uhg.

Another whiney entry. I'm hoping for great weather and new scenery with our new route. I think I just have the training blues.

The BEST running socks

I've been on a quest to find really good running socks - socks that will keep my feet somewhat dry in this ridiculous Texas heat. If you haven't tried them already try the Feetures light! They are fabulous - they keep their nice tight shape and keep my feet from blistering. Love 'em.

Seriously dehydrated and back to reality

I have a new theory - if you spend a weekend eating your weight in Belgian cream puffs - you will eventually run like a cream puff. I hate bad run days and I hate that the saying we are what we eat is really true. I haven't been documenting my food and this is what happens - why I repeatedly do this to myself - I don't know.

I started off the 7 mile tempo run day by waking up at 2:30am and again every 15 min until 4 am - Giving me only 5 hours of really good sleep - I'm paranoid I will over-sleep. Left the house at 4:40 am and headed to Bridlewood to run. Wasn't able to finish the 7 miles due to many factors that I will bullet shortly. I ran 4.5 miles today in 49:10 - HORRIBLE! That puts me at a 10:56 min per mile pace - GAH, and I thought my 10:20 min miles on Sunday were bad! My right leg felt like a numb tree stump - my form was beyond pitiful and my allergies are haywire due to the blasted pollution here in Dallas. Mucus is still running down my throat like waterfall and my eyes are crusted shut and swollen.

I am going to run the remaining 3 miles tonight during my daughter's soccer practice. The temp if finally cooling here and it should only be 93 degrees (33 c) so I should be ok IF I do my body a favor and drink plenty of water today. I only drank 12 ounces yesterday.

Again with the slow run . . .

Sigh. Yesterday's 10 mile (20k) run was not what I expected.

Richard's polite request: "I was hoping we could do faster than 10 min miles today."

My not so polite response: "We will run 9 min miles today."

At mile 4 we were right on target for 9 min miles. I felt great through mile 8 - still on target for 9 min miles. I am not sure what happend those last 2 miles, but at the end of the run my time was 1:43:17. Sigh. Once again running 10 min 20 sec miles. Someday, I will be a fast runner. Patience is not something that agrees with me.

Today is an easy 30 min recovery jog.
