The Long Run

Starting the day at 4:30am, ran 16.94 miles in 3 hrs 3 min and 36 seconds - which is a 10:50 pace, (this includes a 2 mile walking warm-up) This isn't so bad - still my goal for Chicago is a 9 min mile . . . I am well on my way - well see how the stamina workouts help my time. Aside from getting lost again, due to my special navigavtion skills, it was a great run with great weather. 1654 calories burned. In case you were wondering - I LOVE MY NEW SHOES and INSERTS! For the first time in a year - I ran PAIN FREE.

Ipod update: my ipod is in the hospital getting an exam - the diagnosis will be ready on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Ok, so I weigh 129 today . . . Anyone want to guess why?

Let me bore you for a moment. These are the bottom of my feet. For about a year now, I've been having trouble with the 3rd metatarsal on my right foot. A combination of things - very high arches and a lot of mileage mostly. Last night I went to the store Foot Solutions. I figured they would be the knowledgeable about feet kind of people. This polite lady knew right away what I needed and the machine that can do this, confirmed it . . . I'm sure all of you are SO interested in this, so just humor me. See the right foot and the two red spots along the ball . . . Apparently that is bad - I'm putting too much pressure there . . . I left the store spending $65 on new orthodix and a recommendation for new running shoes - so promptly went over to RunOn and bought a new pair of Brooks Adrenaline for $89.99. Hopefully, my foot problems will be history . . . I'm a big sucker if they aren't. I've got 72 days to break these shoes in - shouldn't be a problem.

Forced down breakfast: 1/4 c egg beaters, salsa and avocado, water, aspirin and strong coffee. Lunch: 1/2 turkey, onion, artichoke sandwich & chicken noodle soup. Snack: 4 hershey kisses, water, coffee.

Quite a bit of coughing today, still fatigued - but not as bad as yesterday.

Woe is Me - Everybody Pity Me

I'm sick AND I'm old. Woke up this morning and was really doubting weather or not I should work out. I hate that feeling. I didn't get up until 4:39am. Karrie and I started our sprint workout around 5am and my stomach was so upset, my allergies were bad and my legs were tired. I made it through 6 repeats and had to go inside to vomit. Karrie was running strong this morning and kept going. I came back out and decided to try and walk a few. After 2 I had to go back in and throw up again. I think I may be a little overtrained right now, I don't know. I do know that I HATE being sick. Being a self-proclaimed hypochondriac - I know real sick from my mentally induced illness, and this was real sick even though I tried to talk myself out it it. I may need to take a few days off. I'll have to see how I feel tomorrow. I have an 18 mile run scheduled for Sunday and really want to be strong for that. Morning Weight: 128.4. Afternoon weight: 127.4

Breakfast: 1/2 banana, 1/4 c egg beaters, avocado, coffee diet coke. Lunch: shrimp rice paper wraps with cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts and soy noodles, diet coke. Snack: 2 hershey kisses, coffee. Dinner: 3/4 c penne arrabiata, diet peach tea, water Snack: 1/2 c orange sherbert

Just so you can feel a little more sorry for me - it's 3:48pm and my throat is starting to hurt.

Bagels make you hungry

Breakfast: 1/2 whole wheat bagel with cream cheese, red grapes, cantelope and that other fruit that looks like cantelope but is green, coffee, water. Morning weight: 128.4. Tired this morning, did not want to get out of bed. I'm still hungry too. Seriously thinking about finding some food somewhere. Snack: Fruit & Nut Bar: 140 calories Lunch: whole wheat tortilla with spinach, bree, tomatoes, mushrooms & horseradish sauce. Snack: 4 herhey kisses Dinner: My husband's famous, I've got a bike part hidden around here somewhere penne arrabiata.

Some things are a mystery to me. Last night my husband washed out the inside of the laundry detergent container. When I asked him why he responded "so we don't get our trash can dirty with soap."

I have to say as the day is progressing that I am not feeling any better, I'm still VERY tired, I'm starting to cough and feel really hot and overall generally achy. Hopefully this will subside for our 16 quarter mile repeats tomorrow and tonights workout. BM: 10:05am, 4:15pm (loose), not much spotting. I'm also having the freaky heart beating too fast thing going on. Hopefully it will go away.

I'm getting old

Breakfast: soy nuts & avocado, water, coffee, diet coke. I think I'll hit the salad bar for lunch. (notice the missing snack) Lunch, ok so it wasn't a salad but I did have soy noodles with chicken, cucumbers and bean sprouts (bean sprouts count as vegetables don't they?), diet coke and water. Snack: 7 almonds and water. Dinner: vegetable salad with ranch, iced tea, 1/2 glass red wine, water.

I hate to admit it , but I can certainly feel my age creeping up on me. The heat and the 2-a-day workouts are really taking their toll. My recovery time is a lot slower than it was ten years ago, it takes more sleep and more energy to keep up with the day-to-day activities, it is so much harder just to lose 1-2 lbs. I know the intense training will pay off, I just have to work through it. I hate the fact that the older I get the less calories I need. Seems like it should be the other way around.

My husband suggests I give up some things like diet coke and some processed foods because they make a huge difference. If I hear one more time "your body excretes carbon, it shouldn't be consumed" I might vomit. I wish I could be as dedicated as he is with his diet. I do love my diet coke. The old adage is true - you are what you eat. I need to add more fruits and veggies, this week I will make that my goal. I will also try not to eat any processed foods, or foods with preservatives in them. You would think by the way I'm talking that I was 65 not 35. Went to the hot but after work and sat in the steam room for a while. It's really sad when the hot tub doesn't feel very hot because it's 104 outside.

Easy Day

Workout: Easy 4 mile run. Didn't get out of the house until 8:15 AM so it was already sunny and very hot. I was pretty fatigued from yesterday's workout, I focused on my form today and not time. 42:13 - about a 10:33 pace, which is what I'm currently averaging. Ended the run with headache/nausea - I'm guessing I'm still really dehydrated from yesterday's run. Walked quite a bit the last 1/2 mile. I'm thinking about heading to the hot tub tonight and relax my muscles, heat my right foot - which killed me for about two miles during yesterday's race. It's 3:27 now and I'm thinking a nap is in order.

Breakfast: 1 whole wheat English muffin with butter, one banana, few bites of leftover chicken salad. Water, coffee, water and water. Lunch: 1/2 grilled chicken salad w/Caesar dressing, 1/2 cilantro turkey wrap, water, water, diet coke. Snack: popcorn, diet coke, water, 1 twizzler (During Charlie & Chocolate Factory - very good) Dinner: 4 bites of filet, new potatoes, onion & cucumbers in balsamic vinegar. Don't feel like looking up my calories right now but will tomorrow.

BM: 7:05am, 8:00am, 10am (none yesterday), heavy flow - not as heavy as yesterday (lucky race day) Weight 128.2

Too Hot to Handle, cont.

Yesterday, Kerrie and I picked up my friend Marta, in town from Ohio, and headed to White Rock Lake to run the appropriatly titled 15k race, Too Hot To Handle. And it certainly was - starting race condition was 77% humidty and 87 degrees. It was 92 degrees by the time we finished - felt like 104.

Marta was the rock star of the day - she came in 8th in her age group, and 53rd overall. Way to go Marta! We also saw our friend Staci who works at the Y and she came in 5th in her age group and 39th overall. WOW! I finished pretty slow, time 1:42:25, 12 min slower than I wanted to finish. I was a little freaked out when I got to mile 5 and they were OUT of water. I still can't figure out how RunOn would let that happen. It really threw me off and I was worried they would be out of water at mile 7. Kerrie, smartest of us all, decided it was way to hot and walked most of the course. All-in-all, it was a fun race and certainly a test of our heat endurance.

Still, I'm a little disappointed in myself. I recovered way to fast and should have pushed myself harder. Next race - I will know better. 9 min miles are out there, I just have to work harder to get them. After race weight 127.4 - lost about a pound of water weight, even after drinking 60 oz of water when I was finished.

Yay! Today is a rest day. Didn't get out of bed until 5:30! Wow, how bizzare is it that I consider that a treat. Woke up with a mild headache this morning, allergies are bad - Dallas no longer has an ozone layer. Waiting to see if it goes away before I take anything. BM: 6:40 am, 9am, 10:10 am, spotting still. Shameful Breakfast: egg mcmuffin minus 6 year old canadian. diet coke, coffee, water. Shameful Lunch: two tacos from TacoBell and large diet pepsi, water. Planned dinner so far: pasta & salad.

Be True to Your Blog

5AM Workout - 30 min on Elliptical, upper body weights & abs. Very, very tired this morning. Left foot painful - 3rd metatarsal. Weight 128.2. 8:15am and still no bm. I'm wearing my favorite Carlos Santana Birdcage shoes today. 7PM workout - walked 1 hour - 238 calories burned.

Breakfast: egg beaters with salsa, coffee. I'm still hungry - my avocado was rotten this morning. I may have to get a granola bar - maybe not, not sure yet - maybe a pop tart, i'm so hungry - but I will document it, the calories still count even if it's not blogged - I will be true to my blog, I will let you know my food choice soon. Ok, I ate a sample bite of chicken salad sandwich from Starbucks and have a grande coffee. Still hungry. Snack: 2 snackwell cookier - 120 calories. Lunch: grilled chicken salad - tomatoes, cucumber, onion, one roll. Dinner: one whole wheat pita with feta, tomatoes & balsamic vinigar.

BEWARE

Friends, today is the day I start to document my bowel movements AND my cycle - if that disgusts you - I suggest you stop reading right now. It interferes with my running and I'm going to blog it. I need perfect *timing* for the Chicago Marathon. The right combinations of food are out there - I just need to find them.

Woke up this mourning with a double-whammy diarrhea/period situation. Mother nature loves me. I wondered why I was so fatigued during my Monday & Tuesday workouts. It stinks to hold in diarrhea while sprinting quarter mile repeats wondering the entire time if blood is running down your leg because you can't remember is you put a tampon because your brain doesn't function at 4:30 am. Thank Zeus, it was only 6 repeats today. I'm morning last week's glorious 1:40 repeats they were so strong - yet seem so long ago. The calorie festival is ending today.

Spotting. BM: 4:45 am & 7:35 am. Bad hair day. Multi-vitamin: 8:45 am. Morning weight: 129.2. Massage at 12:15 today. Breakfast 8:15 AM: 1/4 c egg beaters, one small avocado, coffee - 242 calories. Snack: diet coke. Lunch: 1/2 c madarin oranges - 43 calories, 4 wendy chicken nuggets - 171 calories. Snack: crackers - 210 calories. Dinner - pasta with meat sauce, salad, bread. - 413 calories

2-a-days

This weeks starts the two-a-day workouts! Of course, picking the hottest time and most intense part of the training program - it makes perfect sense. Tuesdays and Thursdays are our goal. This week it will be Wednesday and Thursday.

Oh, so tired at the gym this morning - I felt like it was 3:30 am when I woke up and not 4:30. This is a bad feeling, don't like it. 30 minutes of cross training on the elliptical, upper body weights, with some ab work.

Breakfast: 1/4 c egg beaters w 2 tbs salsa - 40 calories, coffee - 40 calories, 1 small avocado - 242 calories. Snack: having diet coke right now, very hungry resisting the urge to eat. Lunch: World's largest salad - lettuce, red kidney beans, chickpeas, spinach, cucumbers, radish, olives, eggs, little cheese, onions, and imitation 6-year old with ranch, balsamic vinegar & olive oil. Few bites of veggie soup and a lettuce wrap with taco meat and tomatoes on it. I'm not quite sure how to document this meal. I'll have to wait until I get home. I don't know, I'm guessing 400 calories. Dinner: fajita meat, 1 tbs sour cream, salsa, guacamole, onions and a little cheese - maybe a sprinkle. No tortilla - 330 calories. One frozen margarita - 170 calories.

Tragedy Strikes a Runner

Two miles into a 15 mile run - my loyal running partner of two years died. No explanation, no warning - just sudden death. I tried to resuscitate her for 15 min, but it was too late she was gone. I don't think I will be able to recover. She was perfect in every way, shape and form. The autopsy is on Monday, and I will let everyone know the cause of death and when the funeral services will be.

I just don't understand how something so loved and perfect could meet such an unfortunate demise. All of you have her me say a million times - if I didn't have such a wonderful husband - I would marry her. She's made it through two marathons and torturous workouts in 100 degree weather. She changed the way I ran.

This is a very dark day. Very dark indeed.

Almost too much to bear, I contemplated not finishing my run today. But, I knew I had to do it - do it for her. I hit the course and headed out to meet the rest of my group. Since I was behind the group by about 25 minutes, I came up with a brilliant idea to run the course backwards and meet them half way and then turn around and run the rest of the course with them. Seemed like a fairly simple idea, until my *special* navigation skills came into play. Missing my right turn on FM Road, I managed to head down Simmons an additional two miles. Thankfully, a couple cyclists were able to point me in the right direction. Who knows where I would have ended up.

All-in-all, I walked about a two mile warm-up. Ran one very fast mile - rushing my dear friend to the emergency room. Then I ran 12.8 miles at a 10:36 pace. Certainly not the pace I was looking for, but faster than other training runs I've had.

Woke up with a really bad sinus headache - the pollution is so bad - it's so hazy. I'm going to take some sudafed, so I will really need to hydrate today. A nap may be in order as well.

Boston Qualifying Times

Adventures in Marking the Course

What a beautiful Flower Mound country side we have. We had a lovely tour this morning. I have to say, I'm not very good at calculating mileage. I think we will have a good course to run on Sunday - and I'm very excited about that. I would love to finish the course in 2 hrs 15 min - that would put me at 9 min miles exactly. If I finish in 2:30 - I'll be ok, that would be 10 min miles. My weight this morning was a lovely 129.4.

Breakfast - coffee - 40 calories, scrambled eggs - 155 calories, 10 peanuts - 59 calories
Lunch - ok, so I think I went overboard at lunch - 6" turkey sub with lf mayo and american cheese, lettuce, pickles, onion, banana peppers and olives - 365 calories. BBQ Baked Chips - 140 calories. That's 505 calories - 1/2 my calories for the day right here.
Snack - 1 chocolate chip - 3 calories, 3 hershey kisses - 75 calories
Dinner - not sure I can accurately calculate because I ate more than any human should eat - Ok, here we go: Penne with marianra and meat sauce - 357 calories, wedge salad with blue cheese - 218 calories, bread - 89 calories, small glass red wine - 87 calories

Weight 129.6 - oh good word, what the hell is wrong with my body! I'm a freak of nature. Ok, so I said I wasn't exercising today - I changed my mind. I'm going to swim 1 hour and do some squats and upper body at lifetime. The international nutrition log says I should be 95 - 116 lbs and close to the low end because I have a small frame! I think I have a retarded metabolism - it really sucks that the older you get the less calories your body needs. Ok, so I'm leaving soon to get a massage - I wish they did liposuction too. How the hell am I going to be able to heave this ass through the Chicago marathon in only 4 hours! I must lose weight - I will lose weight. Today, I will eat hardly nothing! I need to make sure I drink lots of water. Tomorrow will be so HOT.
